Carlow Institute of Technology Visit Hansfield Wood

By December 11, 2017News

The Alanna Homes Team welcomed Carlow IT’s 2nd year Construction Management students to Hansfield last week. Frank Smyth, Head Engineer gave the students and Martin O’Neill, Lecturer from the college’s Department of Build Environment, an insightful tour of our site demonstrating to the student the different Rapid Off-Site System Build(ROSSB) construction methods being used; Precast Concrete and Insulated Concrete Formwork(ICF). With houses and apartments at varying stages of construction, this gave the students a great understanding of the intricacies of managing a site of more than 400 units.

Martin O’Neill tasked students with an assignment on foot of their visit to Hansfield, this ensured that there was plenty of questions being asked of the Alanna Team. Students are also required to complete a number of weeks work experience throughout the course of which I’m sure we will be seeing some of them back on site. Frank Smyth, commented on the visit, ‘I was highly impressed with the students, their enthusiasm and willingness to grasp an understanding of a working site of this scale was reassuring to see as these are the future of the construction industry of Ireland’.

We at Alanna Homes would hope that we can build a lasting relationship with Carlow IT and make these visits an annual occasion for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.

This visit followed a previous tour by Master Students from Carlow IT earlier this year of the Alcrete Precast Concrete factory in Kill, Co Kildare, Alcrete is the supplier of the Pre-Cast wall for Hansfield Wood which gave the Master’s students and end to end view of the build process we use.

We would like to take this opportunity to Thank Keith Darcy, alumni of Carlow IT, who made the introduction that lead to these visits taking place. We would also like to wish the students the very best of luck with their studies and we would hope to be seeing them in the future.
